Heard of the Safeguard Mechanism?
The Safeguard Mechanism has been called the most important climate policy in Australia, and is effectively a pollution speed limit on Australia’s biggest emitters.
The Safeguard Mechanism puts a cap on how much Australia's biggest polluters can pollute. It currently regulates 215 facilities that produce the equivalent of 100,000 tonnes or more of CO2 a year (and worryingly the number of facilities is set to rise if the government allows the opening of new coal and gas projects).
With the Albanese government entering the final decision-making phase on the reform of Australia’s Climate Safeguard Mechanism, now’s the time for community members to content their local Federal MP's.
