It's time big polluters paid their fair share.

Climate impacts are already hitting our cost of living — insurance premiums and access, food security, disaster recovery and adaptation costs, to name a few. This is only going to get worse.

It's not fair that local residents, ratepayers and small businesses are footing the bill while coal, gas and oil exporters profit from the pollution driving these costs. Councils are struggling too.

Council Costs Outstripping Revenue

Disaster costs vs local government revenue, 2004-05 to 2024-25 — Insurance Council of Australia (2025) ICA Historical Catastrophe List; Australian Bureau of Statistics via The Australia Institute, Sept 2025

Why it matters

  • Rising insurance premiums, and insurance becoming harder to get at all

  • Councils absorbing adaptation costs their rate base was never built for

  • The gap between disaster costs and council revenue keeps widening

How the fund works

  • A pollution levy on big coal, gas and oil exporters

  • Levy proceeds go into a national Climate Compensation Fund

  • Fund pays out to communities and councils facing climate costs

Australian councils already on board, including Hobart City

Local people all around Australia are getting involved in this campaign — and so can you. The Communities for Climate Compensation National Campaign is a grassroots movement that's already supported 12 local councils, including Hobart City here in Tasmania, to pass motions calling on the Federal Government to levy big coal, gas and oil exporters.
