Why this matters now
Tasmania's Climate Change Act 2008 is under formal review — the first real opportunity in years to strengthen it. Right now, the Act isn't reducing emissions and it isn't protecting Tasmanians from the impacts already underway. Hundreds of people engaged with the review through submissions and surveys, and 82% of Tasmanians want governments to do more on climate. Parliament can't ignore that many voices — and together with 13 other organisations, we're making sure they don't..
The reforms we're asking for
These are the minimum changes needed to protect Tasmanians and meaningfully reduce emissions:
Legislated, absolute emissions reduction targets — not aspirational, not offset-based.
An independent climate body to hold government accountable to those targets.
A state-wide climate adaptation plan so communities aren't left to manage growing risks alone.
These reforms give Tasmanian businesses and families the certainty they need for a sensible, equitable response to climate change.
