Dr Beth Hill is a writer, anthropologist and facilitator who has spent more than a decade helping people work through the emotional side of the climate crisis. She holds a PhD in Anthropology, with her thesis exploring how communities come to terms with what climate change means in their daily lives, including fieldwork with a Blue Mountains community recovering from a devastating bushfire. Beth trained with Joanna Macy in the Work that Reconnects and has been facilitating this approach since 2013, drawing on deep ecology, mindfulness and creative processes involving art and writing. She has led group work for environmental activists, organisations, and local and state government and community groups for ten years, and has a longstanding Buddhist Insight meditation practice that shapes her focus on the body as a gateway to insight, healing and action. Beth has worked as Program Development Coordinator with Psychology for a Safe Climate since 2021, developing and designing climate aware workshops and interactive seminars, and mentoring and training other facilitators. She believes climate action has to reckon with our internal worlds as much as our external ones, understanding climate distress as a psycho social cultural phenomenon shaped by who we are and what action feels possible to us.
