Getting ready for a hot summer: a practical guide to disaster preparedness
Oct
2026
Government advice is to prepare for power outages, supply disruptions and disasters. That isn't "prepping" in the doomsday sense. It's a sensible response to a hotter, riskier climate. Getting ready is mostly small, practical stuff, and it's easier with neighbours.
Make a simple plan
Know your risks: bushfire, storm, flood, heat
Write down key contacts and where you'd go
Think through life without power, water, phone or roads
Include pets, medicines and anyone you look after
Red Cross's RediPlan and Get Prepared app or SES's Get Ready guide will walk you through it.
Pack a kit
One for staying home, one for leaving in a hurry. Red Cross has a packing checklist.
Talk to your neighbours
Share your plan and ask about theirs. Who can help whom? Community connection is one of our best protections, and it's easier to build before you need it.
Extra support needs
Tasmania SES runs free workshops and a workbook for people with disability, chronic illness or age-related needs, and for carers: Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness.
Look after kids, and yourself
Children: Emerging Minds' trauma toolkit and Red Cross Pillowcase workshops for ages 8 to 10
Everyone: Beyond Blue, plus our Healthy Minds in a Changing Climate talk
