Submission on Biomass Burning of Native Forests in the Emissions Reduction Fund

Jan

2022

Dr Jennifer Sanger, on behalf of The Tree Projects and the Tasmanian Climate Collective, argues that native forest biomass should not be eligible under the Emissions Reduction Fund. The submission highlights the high emissions associated with burning native forest wood for energy, the decades required for forests to recover lost carbon, and the risk that biomass markets could create additional incentives for native forest logging. It also outlines the implications for threatened forest-dependent species and argues that protecting native forests would provide significant climate and biodiversity benefits.
