Submission on the Browse Gas Project EPBC Reconsideration Request

Jul

2026

The Tasmanian Climate Collective's submission supports the Australian Conservation Foundation's request that the Browse Gas Project be reconsidered under the EPBC Act, citing new attribution science, a February 2026 report by Professor Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, linking the project's estimated 1,597 million tonnes of lifetime CO2 emissions to measurable coral loss on the Great Barrier Reef during future bleaching events. It also raises the project's direct risks to Scott Reef, including oil spill risk, seabed subsidence, and threats to pygmy blue whales and green turtles. The submission calls on the Minister to accept the reconsideration request, recognise the new evidence, and apply the precautionary principle.
