Submission on the Draft Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2026-2031
Jul
2026
The Tasmanian Climate Collective's submission on the draft Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy argues the strategy under-emphasises the Avoid and Reduce steps of the waste hierarchy in favour of technological fixes, and calls for a genuine circular economy with government funding to grow the reuse, repair and recycling sector rather than relying on volunteers and social enterprises. It recommends explicit targets and monitoring for methane from organic waste via expanded FOGO collection and fluorinated gases from end-of-life refrigeration and air conditioning units, and flags the need to plan for waste streams created by electrification, such as stranded gas appliances and end-of-life petrol and diesel vehicles.
