Submission to the Independent Review of the Tasmanian Climate Change Act

Sept

2025

The Tasmanian Climate Collective's submission to the Independent Review of the Tasmanian Climate Change Act argues the Act has failed and must be substantially rewritten. It calls for a legislated absolute emissions reduction target of at least 40% by 2030, replacing the already-met net zero target, annual absolute emissions reduction targets for every sector without reliance on offsets or LULUCF sequestration, and an independent, well-resourced statutory climate change authority modelled on the UK's Climate Change Committee. It also recommends a mandatory adaptation plan addressing the state's Climate Change Risk Assessment, wider consultation including Palawa and climate scientists in developing sector plans, and a Future Generations Commissioner.
