Submission to the Inquiry on Home Electrification

Sept

2023

The Tasmanian Climate Collective’s submission to the Senate Economics Reference Committee supports rapid household electrification as a key part of Australia’s climate and energy transition. Drawing on the Tasmanian context, it highlights the potential for lower household energy and transport costs, job creation, greater energy independence and improved resilience. The submission identifies fossil fuel subsidies, industry influence, upfront costs and opposition to energy infrastructure as barriers, and recommends redirecting fossil fuel subsidies towards electrification, supporting low-income households, and expanding community-owned renewable energy. It also calls for governments to prioritise independent scientific advice when developing climate and energy policy.
