Right now, Tasmania's Climate Change Act 2008 is being reviewed.

This offers a rare window to #FixTheAct and make sure Tasmania prepares communities for the impacts already underway.

The current Climate Change Act is not reducing emissions and it's not protecting Tasmanians.

82% of Tasmanians want governments to do more on climate change and hundreds of people across the state engaged with the Review of the Climate Change Act in submissions and surveys. Our parliament can’t ignore them.

We are working together with 13 organisations along with other groups who care, to ask Parliament to reduce climate pollution and protect us from climate impacts.

Together we can make sure Parliament acts

The solution

The reforms we are asking for are the minimum to protect Tasmanians and reduce emissions:

  • Legislated absolute emissions reductions targets

  • An independent climate body

  • A state-wide climate adaptation plan

These reforms are needed to give certainty to Tasmanian businesses and families in a sensible and equitable response to the threat of climate change.

How you can take action with us

  • Signing our Open Letter calling on MPs to strengthen the Act.

  • Coming to our events in February and March and helping us to spread the word, start conversations and stay loud

  • Contacting and/or meeting your local MP and asking them to back these reforms.

Our MPs won't know that we want a stronger Climate Act unless we tell them. So let's make sure they know we want to be safer

The problem

  • 98% of Tasmania is bushfire prone (TFS)

  • 1 in 8 Tasmanian properties are at risk of floods.

  • Our home insurance is becoming unaffordable

  • Our transport relies on100% imported, polluting petrol and diesel that is vulnerable to global supply shocks.

  • Our communities are vulnerable to increasing bushfire, floods and storms, along with the increasing hit to the state budget towards $320 million pa by 2050

  • The state’s 2024 climate risk assessment identified 26 climate risks that required urgent adaptation action in the next five years. These include "risks to health care and emergency services, and to transport infrastructure, due to predicted extensive damage and readjustment costs.”

Where are the plans to keep us safe from the climate impacts that the government has been repeatedly warned about for decades?

Have your say on Tasmania’s Climate Change Act

The independent Reviewer has provided everyone with three opportunities to provide feedback - through a submission, a survey and an ideas wall. We’ve created guides for all three and would really love it if you took the time to have your say in all three ways (but we won’t judge if you only have time for one!)
